The closest airport to Tulum is Tulum International Airport (TQO). It is about 21 km from town as the crow flies but 41 km by road: we measured 45 minutes to La Veleta, 48 to Aldea Zamá and 51 to 54 to the beach road, without traffic. Cancún (CUN) is 117 to 124 km and 93 to 100 minutes away.
In 2026 the drive is not what decides it — the flight is. Two things changed this year that most guides to Tulum, Quintana Roo, have not caught up with. Tulum’s airport lost most of its international routes between January and May 2026 — four international destinations were left in late May, against twelve in 2024 — before a winter schedule of nine international origins from 25 October. And once you price the ride, the airport 76 km farther away is not the dearer one to leave: private transfers from both airports cost about the same per vehicle, and for a van of eight Cancún is often cheaper per head. Everything below is dated 11 September 2026: the distances are our own measurements on open map data, the fares come from each operator’s own price list, and the flight figures from the airport operators, Quintana Roo’s tourism ministry and the Mexican press.
How Far Is Tulum Airport From Tulum? 21 km in a Straight Line, 41 km by Road
Tulum International sits inland, west-southwest of town. The road does not go there directly: it runs about 14 km along the airport access road to Highway 307, then 26 km up the highway into Tulum. That geometry is why two honest-looking figures circulate. The “13 miles” or “20 km” you see quoted is the straight line. The 41 km is what you drive.
We measured both airports against the places people actually stay, on 11 September 2026, with an open routing engine on OpenStreetMap data. Times are free-flowing traffic; add time at rush hour.
| To… | From Tulum Airport (TQO) | From Cancún Airport (CUN), Terminal 3 | Cancún adds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tulum town (Highway 307 × Avenida Cobá) | 40.8 km · 45 min | 117.1 km · 94 min | +76 km · +49 min |
| La Veleta | 40.8 km · 45 min | 119.7 km · 97 min | +79 km · +52 min |
| Aldea Zamá | 42.7 km · 48 min | 118.1 km · 93 min | +75 km · +45 min |
| Beach road, km 4.5 (Papaya Playa Project) | 45.6 km · 51 min | 119.5 km · 94 min | +74 km · +43 min |
| Beach road, km 7 (Taboo) | 48.4 km · 54 min | 122.4 km · 98 min | +74 km · +44 min |
| Straight line to Tulum town | 20.8 km | 110.9 km | — |
Cancún’s Terminals 2 and 4 add up to 1.5 km and 3 minutes to the Terminal 3 figures. Neither route uses a toll road.
Why every source gives Tulum Airport a different drive time
On the day we measured, Google’s AI answer to this search put Tulum’s airport “13 to 20 miles (20 to 31 km) southwest of Tulum” with “a 30 to 45-minute drive to the town center or beach zone.” Perplexity, which we asked as a traveller staying in Aldea Zamá, said to expect about 20 to 25 minutes. A hotel guide updated in June 2026 says 20 to 30 minutes; the guide ranking first for this search says 40 to 60. The measured drive to Aldea Zamá is 48 minutes before any traffic. The short figures line up with the straight-line distance, not with the road — so plan the road.
Which Airlines Still Fly to Tulum Airport in 2026
Does Tulum have an airport? Yes: Tulum International opened on 1 December 2023 and handled 1,244,661 passengers in 2025, according to its operator, Grupo Mundo Maya. Cancún handled more than 29 million the same year, by its operator ASUR’s count — nearly 24 times as many. That ratio, more than the drive, is the difference between the two airports: it is why Cancún has nonstops from so many more cities.
2026 has been hard on Tulum’s airport. El Universal reported in May that Avianca, Copa Airlines, JetBlue and Volaris Costa Rica had suspended their Tulum flights, and that seat supply for May was 60% below May 2025. International operations fell from 446 in January to 181 in May, a drop of more than 59%, 24 Horas Quintana Roo reported. One aviation consultant expects around 700,000 passengers this year. Then, for winter, the list grows again:
| Period | International destinations from Tulum Airport | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 12, including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Panama | El Universal and UnoTV, 25 May 2026 |
| Late May 2026 | 4: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Miami, flown by American, Delta and United | El Universal and UnoTV, 25 May 2026 |
| 25 October 2026 – 27 March 2027 (announced) | 9: Atlanta, Calgary, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Montréal, Newark, Québec and Toronto — plus Mexico City (AICM and Felipe Ángeles), Monterrey and Guadalajara at home | Quintana Roo tourism ministry, via Reportur, 3 September 2026 |
Two practical consequences. First, check your airline’s own schedule for your exact dates, not a route map: search summaries still list winter-only routes such as Newark, Toronto and Calgary as if they flew all year. Second, Southwest is on none of these lists; Southwest customers fly to Cancún. The winter window covers most of Tulum’s high season — the months are set out in the best time to visit Tulum.
If you own a villa in Tulum, here is what the 2026 flight numbers mean for villa owners.
Tulum Airport to Your Villa: Private Car, ADO Bus or Tren Maya
We could find no official taxi tariff for Tulum’s airport, published by the airport or by Quintana Roo’s transport institute. On 3 September 2026 La Jornada Maya reported that the Tulum taxi union’s new 24-zone “official” tariff sheet carries no agreement number, signature, stamp or authorisation date. What you can compare are the prices operators publish:
| From Tulum Airport (TQO) | One way, as published on 11 September 2026 | Capacity | Arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private car to Tulum town, La Veleta or Aldea Zamá | $70 (thetulumairport.com) · $119 (Xaman-Ha Connections) · $124 starting price (airporttulum.net), per vehicle | 1–3 | At your door, 45–48 min |
| Private van, same zone | $117 for 4–7 and $136 for 8–10 (thetulumairport.com) · $129 for 4–8 (Xaman-Ha), per vehicle | 4–10 | At your door, 45–48 min |
| Private car or van to the beach road | $94 for 1–3 · $133 for 4–7 · $149 for 8–10 (thetulumairport.com) | 1–10 | 51–54 min |
| ADO bus | About 220 pesos (about $13) per person | Per seat | Tulum’s downtown bus station, 50 min · then a taxi |
Those private prices are not the airport’s. thetulumairport.com describes itself as a non-official guide and sells the transfers it lists; airporttulum.net titles its page “Official Transfers and Rates” but is a private transfer seller, not the airport’s site, which the Tren Maya links as aitulum.mx. Xaman-Ha Connections, a Tulum transfer company, also reports airport taxis booked online at $57 for up to three people to Tulum town; we could not find that tariff published by the airport or the taxi operator.
The ADO bus is the budget route. The Busbud booking platform showed seven departures from the terminal on 11 September 2026, between 10:45 and 16:20, each taking 50 minutes to downtown — some days add a later bus. It leaves you at the bus station with your luggage; on the union’s disputed new sheet, a taxi ride within town to La Veleta costs 50 to 100 pesos depending on the zone.
The Tren Maya is not a practical way to a villa. Tulum Airport’s station is 5 km by road from the terminal, and Tulum’s town station is 8 to 11 km by road from the town centre, Aldea Zamá and La Veleta — two extra transfers for a 41 km trip.
Cancún Airport to Tulum: What Changes When You Land 117 km Away
ASUR, which operates Cancún’s airport, lists three kinds of ground transport on its own Cancún transfers page: ADO buses from Terminals 2, 3 and 4, taxis at Terminals 2 and 3, and Hertz car rental. Beyond that, the market is pre-booked transfer companies:
| From Cancún Airport (CUN) | One way, as published | Capacity | Arrives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private van to Tulum | $69.50 (eTransfers) · $125 (airportcancun.com, operated by eTransfers) · $129 (Caribbean Transfers), per vehicle | Up to 8 | At your door, 93–98 min |
| Shared shuttle | $37 per person (eTransfers) | Per seat | Longer: stops at other hotels |
| ADO bus | Sold on ado.com.mx at the day’s fare | Per seat | Tulum’s downtown bus station · then a taxi |
| Tren Maya | One train a day on the official timetable: Cancún station 10:46, Tulum Airport station 12:50 | Per seat | Stops in Tulum; station 8–11 km from the villa areas |
Two things in that table deserve a warning. The same operator shows $69.50 on its own site and $125 on an affiliated site verified in August 2026, so ask for the price for your vehicle size and date in writing. And the Tren Maya’s Cancún station is not at the terminals: it is 8.3 km by road from Terminal 3, bridged since 15 August 2026 by a connecting service, “Tren Maya Conecta.”
The Cancún “official taxi” rate list is a private seller’s
The rate list most often quoted for this trip is published at cancunairport.com, whose page is titled “Official Cancun Airport Taxis.” It is not the airport operator’s site: its footer reads “©2025 Cancunairport.com,” while ASUR, which runs the airport, publishes at asur.com.mx. Its last archived copy, of 14 March 2026, listed Tulum from $64.63 booked online and $124 at the desk, 120 km and “100+ min”, without saying whether the price is per vehicle. It is a useful benchmark, and it shows one thing clearly: a walk-up fare runs close to double a pre-booked one. We compared the two destinations, rather than the two airports, in Tulum vs Cancún on real numbers.
Tulum Airport vs Cancún: Transfer Cost per Person by Group Size
This is the table that settles the “closer must be cheaper” assumption. It divides the private-vehicle prices above by the number of travellers, one way, to Tulum town, La Veleta or Aldea Zamá.
| Travellers | From Tulum Airport (41–43 km) | From Cancún Airport (117–120 km) | Cancún adds on the road |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | $35–$62 each (one car, $70–$124) | $35–$65 each (one van, $69.50–$129) · or $37 each shared | 45–52 min |
| 4 | $29–$32 each (one van, $117–$129) | $17–$32 each (one van, $69.50–$129) | 45–52 min |
| 8 | $16–$17 each (one van, $129–$136) | $9–$16 each (one van, $69.50–$129) | 45–52 min |
| 16 | $16 each (two vans, $253–$258) | $9–$16 each (two vans, $139–$258) | 45–52 min |
For a couple the two airports come out level; from four travellers up, Cancún is never the dearer ride, because its vans take eight at one price. Four is also where every private van price from Cancún beats the $37 shared shuttle per head, at $17 to $32; at eTransfers’ $69.50, a couple already pays less than the shuttle. Luggage for eight fills a van, so confirm the vehicle before you split the bill. What Cancún really costs you is time — 45 to 52 minutes each way to the villa areas, about an hour and a half over a round trip. So compare the two flights, fare against schedule, and treat the transfer as roughly a wash.
Driving From Tulum or Cancún Airport: No Tolls, One Highway
There is no toll on either drive. Both measured routes run on free Federal Highway 307 — 112.8 of the 117.1 km from Cancún’s Terminal 3, and 26 of the 41 km from Tulum’s airport, the rest being the airport access road. Quintana Roo’s toll plazas sit on other roads: the Cancún–Mérida highway, the Playa del Carmen spur and the Felipe Carrillo Puerto bypass.
The catch is insurance. The cheap online rental rate rarely includes Mexico’s mandatory third-party liability cover, typically quoted at about $8 to $17 a day at the counter. Get the all-in price in writing before you book. Fuel is the small line: at around 25 pesos a litre in Quintana Roo in early September 2026, the 117 km from Cancún take about 9 to 10 litres in a mid-size car using 8 litres per 100 km — roughly $14.
A car earns its keep if you plan to drive to cenotes or ruins on your own schedule. For a group, one car is rarely enough and one van with a driver on arrival day is simpler.
Uber, DiDi and InDrive at Tulum and Cancún Airports
Do not plan an arrival around an app. In March 2026 Mexico’s transport ministry restated that Uber, DiDi and Cabify have no authorisation to pick up passengers in the federal zone of the country’s 71 airports, and that the National Guard patrols arrivals. Uber holds a court suspension that, its spokesperson says, bars drivers from being detained or fined for dropping off or picking up; Por Esto reported that Cancún’s terminal has no intention of opening pickup zones, and that sanctions continue. In Tulum itself Uber does not operate, El Universal noted in May. One Tulum transfer company reports InDrive drivers collecting from Tulum Airport’s main car park rather than at the terminal.
Closest Airport to Tulum or Cancún: How to Choose
| Your situation | Fly into | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your airline flies nonstop to Tulum on your dates | Tulum (TQO) | 45–54 minutes to the villa areas and the beach road, against 93–100; the transfer costs about the same |
| Reaching Tulum would take a connection | Cancún (CUN) | A nonstop plus 45–52 minutes of highway beats a connection and a layover |
| A group arriving on several flights from different cities | Usually Cancún | More nonstops means fewer guests connecting; one van per arrival wave, $9–$16 a head for eight |
| Flying from Canada or Newark between late October and late March | Check Tulum first | The winter list adds Calgary, Montréal, Newark, Québec and Toronto |
| Landing at Tulum after 4 pm with nothing booked | Book a private car before you fly | The last ADO bus listed for 11 September left at 16:20, and the airport publishes no taxi tariff |
| Two people, budget first | Either | ADO from Tulum’s airport at about $13 each plus a taxi, or eTransfers from Cancún: $35 each in its $69.50 private van, $37 in its shared shuttle |
Arriving at a Tulum Villa With a Group
All six of our houses are on the jungle side of Tulum, which is why the La Veleta and Aldea Zamá rows of the first table are the ones that apply to our guests: 45 to 48 minutes from Tulum’s airport, 93 to 97 from Cancún’s Terminal 3. Our villas in Tulum sleep eight to eighteen guests, with rates published on each house, and two of them — Ambre & Épices and Yum Kaax — take sixteen and eighteen, which is two or three vans from either airport.
The transfer is a small line next to the stay. For a group of eight, the round trip comes to $17 to $34 a head whichever airport you choose; four nights in one of our houses comes to $161 to $296 a guest, taxes in, as our Tulum bachelorette page works out. Where the arrival goes wrong is timing: eight people on three flights, landing hours apart at two different airports. A wedding multiplies it, which is why we cover guest flights and transfers in planning a destination wedding in Tulum. Our concierge team arranges airport transfers from Tulum or Cancún, one vehicle per arrival wave rather than four taxis, planned around your flight numbers. If you are still choosing a neighbourhood, we compare them in where to stay in Tulum.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the closest airport to Tulum?
Tulum International Airport, code TQO, officially Aeropuerto Internacional de Tulum “Felipe Carrillo Puerto”. It opened on 1 December 2023 and sits inland, west-southwest of town. The straight-line distance is about 21 km, which is where the “13 miles” and “20 km” figures come from, but the road distance is about 41 km: roughly 14 km of airport access road to Highway 307, then 26 km of highway into Tulum. Measured on 11 September 2026 without traffic, the drive is 45 minutes to the town crossroads and La Veleta, 48 minutes to Aldea Zamá and 51 to 54 minutes to the beach road. Cancún International (CUN) is the next option, at 117 to 124 km and 93 to 100 minutes depending on the terminal and where you stay. Cozumel also has an international airport, but it is on an island: reaching Tulum from it means a ferry to Playa del Carmen and a drive south.
Which airport do you fly into for Tulum?
Whichever one has a nonstop from your city on your dates, and in 2026 that is more often Cancún. Tulum’s own airport is closer — 45 to 54 minutes to the villa areas and the beach road, against 93 to 100 from Cancún — but its route map shrank sharply this year: by late May 2026 only four international destinations were left, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Miami. For 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, Quintana Roo’s tourism ministry lists nine: Atlanta, Calgary, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Montréal, Newark, Québec and Toronto. Cancún handled more than 29 million passengers in 2025 against 1.24 million at Tulum, so it has nonstops from far more cities. The rule that holds: take a nonstop to Tulum if one exists for your dates; otherwise fly nonstop to Cancún rather than connect, because a connection usually costs more time than the extra 45 to 52 minutes of highway.
Is it better to fly into Cancún or Tulum?
Better on the ground, Tulum; better in the air, usually Cancún. From Tulum’s airport the drive to La Veleta or Aldea Zamá is 45 to 48 minutes, against 93 to 97 from Cancún’s Terminal 3, measured on 11 September 2026. What surprises people is that the closer airport is not cheaper to leave. Private transfers published that day ran $70 to $124 per car from Tulum’s airport to town and $69.50 to $129 per van of up to eight from Cancún, so a group of eight pays $16 to $17 a head from Tulum and $9 to $16 from Cancún. The ground costs roughly cancel out, and the choice comes down to the flight: its price, its timing and whether it is nonstop. Cancún wins on choice, with nearly 24 times Tulum’s passengers in 2025. Tulum wins on the last hour of a long travel day, which matters most with children or after an early start.
Is it cheaper to fly to Cancún or Tulum?
It depends on your dates, but the odds favour Cancún, and the transfer does not take the saving back. We do not publish airfares here — they move daily — but the structural reasons are on the record: Cancún handled more than 29 million passengers in 2025 against 1.24 million at Tulum, and airlines cut Tulum hard in 2026, with seat supply for May 60% below May 2025, according to El Universal. On the ground the gap is smaller than people expect. One-way private transfers published on 11 September 2026 were $70 to $124 per car from Tulum’s airport and $69.50 to $129 per van from Cancún: $35 to $62 a head for a couple from Tulum, $35 to $65 from Cancún, and from four travellers up Cancún is never the dearer ride. So compare the two fares directly. Whatever Cancún saves on the ticket you keep, and you pay for it in time: 45 to 52 extra minutes each way.
Which US cities fly direct to Tulum?
In late May 2026, four: Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Miami, flown by American, Delta and United, according to El Universal. That was down from twelve international destinations in 2024, a list that included Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. For the winter season from 25 October 2026 to 27 March 2027, Quintana Roo’s tourism ministry lists Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Newark on the US side, plus Calgary, Montréal, Québec and Toronto in Canada. Southwest does not appear on any of those lists; Southwest flies to Cancún instead. Two cautions before you book. Tulum’s schedule has changed several times a year since the airport opened, so check your airline’s own timetable for your exact dates rather than a route map. And search summaries still show some winter-only routes, such as Newark and the Canadian cities, as if they ran all year round.
How much does a taxi cost from Tulum Airport to Tulum?
There is no official tariff to quote. We could find none published by the airport or by Quintana Roo’s transport institute, and on 3 September 2026 La Jornada Maya reported that the Tulum taxi union’s new “official” tariff sheet carries no mark of authorisation. What exists are operators’ published prices. On 11 September 2026, one-way private cars from Tulum Airport to Tulum town, La Veleta or Aldea Zamá were $70 for up to three people at thetulumairport.com, $119 at Xaman-Ha Connections and from $124 at airporttulum.net, with vans at $117 to $136 for four to ten. The beach road costs more: $94 to $149 at the first. The budget route is the ADO bus, about 220 pesos (roughly $13) and 50 minutes to the downtown bus station, then a short taxi. Agree any taxi fare in pesos before the car moves.
How much is a taxi from Cancún to Tulum?
Pre-booked, one way, $69.50 to $129 for a private van of up to eight people on the operators’ price lists we read on 11 September 2026: eTransfers at $69.50 on its own site and $125 on an affiliated site, Caribbean Transfers at $129. A shared shuttle is about $37 a person. The rate list most often quoted, at cancunairport.com, is a private transfer seller’s despite its “official” title; its last archived copy, from 14 March 2026, showed Tulum from $64.63 booked online and $124 at the desk. That gap is the useful lesson: book before you fly, because walk-up fares run close to double. The drive is 117 to 122 km and 93 to 98 minutes from Terminal 3 to Tulum town, the villa areas and the beach road, without traffic. ASUR, the airport’s operator, also lists ADO buses from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 to Tulum’s downtown station.
Are Ubers allowed at Tulum airport?
Not for pickups, on the federal government’s reading, and not at any Mexican airport. In March 2026 Mexico’s transport ministry restated that Uber, DiDi and Cabify have no authorisation to collect passengers in the federal zone of the country’s 71 airports, where pickup is reserved for operators authorised by the civil aviation agency and the airport, and the National Guard patrols arrivals. Uber holds a court suspension that its spokesperson says protects drivers from detention or fines for dropping off or picking up, but Por Esto reported that Cancún’s terminal has no plan to open pickup zones and that sanctions continue. In Tulum itself Uber does not operate, El Universal noted in May 2026. One Tulum transfer company reports InDrive drivers collecting from the airport’s main car park instead of the terminal. With luggage and a schedule to keep, a pre-booked car or the ADO bus is the reliable plan.
Written by the Villas Ambar team in Tulum, where we run six houses and arrange airport transfers for our guests. One thing in this article is our own work: every distance and driving time, measured on 11 September 2026 with an open routing engine on OpenStreetMap data, from both airport terminals as OpenStreetMap maps them. Everything else is quoted from its publisher and dated — passenger numbers from Grupo Mundo Maya and ASUR, routes from El Universal, 24 Horas Quintana Roo and Quintana Roo’s tourism ministry, fares from each operator’s own price list read on 11 September 2026, the train times from the Tren Maya’s official timetable. Peso conversions use 16.97 pesos to the dollar, the mid-market rate that day. Airline schedules and transfer prices change without notice, so the price an operator confirms in writing for your date always wins.
